Enlarged Prostate
Causes
The
causes of enlarged prostate are not well known; it exists,
however, some theories:
Hormonal factor
- many researchers speculate that inflammation may be due to a hormonal problem. Your body produces testosterone
(secreted in the testes of males and the ovaries of females) and estrogens. Those two hormones help the prostate to
stay in normal size. As you get older, however, a hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone tends to
occur.
Age
- Another theory is that with age, there is an abnormal conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
and estradiol (a sex
hormone
) in the prostate. Normally, at normal levels, dihydrotestosterone helps control the prostate gland.
The problem happens when
there is an excessive accumulation of DHT in your blood, promoting cell growth in the prostate
gland.
Family history
- although genetics plays no role in the occurrence of enlarged prostate
, men with a close relative who has suffered from BPH appear to be most at risk.
